Each week we would talk on the telephone; at times, difficult, as my dad was very deaf and refused to wear a hearing aid. I would often ask whether he was eating properly to be told “yes, weather is fine here as well”. I don’t think he ever wrote a letter in his life, that was my mum’s responsibility. Sarah, my wife, often wrote to him enclosing little treats. His only means of contact after mum’s death was this telephone. It came, new with the house and the years of use can be seen in the grime on the keys. Two weeks before he died he phoned to thank us both for what we had done for him-he was very lucid and spoke without hesitation. The telephone was one of the first things I noticed when we arrived for the funeral. It brought back the memory of that last call. The square format was chosen to emphasise its significance within the frame and its importance to our relationship.
